(Africa Global Logistics) – Angolan authorities have declared AGL (Africa Global Logistics) the successful bidder for the container and conventional terminals at Lobito, following an international tender launched in January 2023. Angola is relying on the experience and expertise of AGL, the leading port concession operator in Africa, which provides strong guarantees in terms of strategy, finance, and technology.

AGL’s industrial project, with support from the world’s leading shipper, MSC, will enhance the connectivity of the Lobito port platform. It will boost trade in the region and support industrialization efforts. The Port of Lobito will play a key role in the development of agricultural projects, construction projects, and tertiary service businesses, thereby improving the quality of life for 35 million Angolans and neighboring populations.

As the second-largest port hub in Angola, the Port of Lobito aims to meet the needs of improving the lives of 35 million Angolans and neighboring populations. It is strategically positioned to play a vital role in the global energy transition as the first Atlantic gateway to the Copperbelt region. This port infrastructure will facilitate the transportation of strategic minerals (copper, cobalt) to international markets.

The Port of Lobito will benefit from its connection to the existing 1300 km Benguela railway network and the future railway line to Zambia. By enhancing the productivity of this platform, substantial reductions in transit times for goods to Europe and the Americas are anticipated.

“We appreciate the trust placed in the Africa Global Logistics project for the Port of Lobito by the Angolan authorities. This decision validates AGL’s strategy in service of Africa’s transformations, as well as our commitment to facing the continent’s challenges alongside our stakeholders. This ambition is the primary motivation of our teams, whom I congratulate for this 22nd port concession,” stated Philippe Labonne, President of Africa Global Logistics.

AGL is committed to increasing the attractiveness of the terminal and

Commissioning of Kenya’s First Locally Made Cargo Ship

(Ecofin Agency) – The MV Uhuru II, Kenya’s first locally built cargo ship, was inaugurated on Tuesday, October 9, 2023, by President William Ruto. Measuring 100 meters in length, it has a gross tonnage of 1800 tonnes and can transport up to 22 wagons and 2 million liters of crude oil per voyage.

With a budget of nearly 2.4 billion Kenyan shillings, the project was carried out at the Kisumu shipyard with technical assistance from the Dutch shipbuilder Damen. It is expected to operate on the country’s inland and regional waterways.

According to Kenyan authorities, the construction of the ship was initiated to enhance the capacity of the national fleet in response to the growing freight shipments to neighboring landlocked countries. It will particularly strengthen the supply chain for Uganda, whose orders for petroleum products via the Port of Mombasa have been handled by the MV Uhuru I, built in 1966.

While waiting for the mobilization of funding for the construction of the transnational SGR network between Kenya and Uganda, the MV Uhuru II will play a key role in shifting road traffic, especially from the Northern Corridor, to other modes of transportation. It takes the ship 10 hours to reach the Tanzanian or Ugandan capitals, as opposed to a 12 to 14-hour journey by road, which also carries a higher risk of accidents.
